Usually people start thinking about having their own fashion business when they’re young between 20-30years old. The first thing you can do if you dream this career is to attend a fashion school where you can choose to study different fashion courses ( designer, marketing, management, production and so on and so forth)

As soon as you’re graduated you’ll surely ask yourself this following question:

Do I have to set up my own fashion business or may I work for some existing brand?

The answer is up to you and your aims and I hope that at the end of this post you’ll find the solution.

We are at the end of Paris Fashion week so we saw lots of runways, parties and super cool people but the reality is that it is not everything as glamour as it appear.

You need to know that if you want set up your own fashion business you’ll spent only the 10% of your time designing , the rest of the time you are the CEO of your business so you’ll have to manage numbers and business situations . If you own your fashion business you are a #businesswoman so you have to manage the productions, your employees ( hoping that they won’t fail) , your suppliers, you have to meet Franca Sozzani and you have to eat!

Being successful in fashion world it is maybe the hardest of the all business. There is a lots of competition, how many fashion brands do you know?

If you want to set up your fashion business and make it successful you have to work 24/7. This is what the biggest fashion companies do and what you will need to do too.

To be successful you have to be interested in fashion, understand what people want and give them something different and unique but moreover you have to be a BOSS ! You need to have entrepreneurial skills. There isn’t a famous fashion brand that is successful only for the designer , you need to creare something really cool but if you can’t manage it you won’t be successful!

If you want to set up your fashion business, you need to find some people that can help you. You have to find some experts, you will need a lawyer, an accountant, a photographer, a tailor (if you do not know sewing or if you need a hand in the production)  a manager of the production .

What about the money?

You need money to start your business, you can ask to your family or friends or banks, it is essential that you have the sources of funding from the beginning.

You have to know that the first periods ( can be years) are the most difficult and  it is really hard that you’ll get more money than what you’ll spend, so do not get down immediately, it may take some time before you can give you a salary.

Now you have to focus on your line

Why will you be different from others? For the price, the quality, for your story? You have to decide if you want to create a luxury brand or a low cost brand such as Zara, H&M . Focus on one of them and be the best, study your competitors ,find a mentor and learn from the best!
