How to Dress like a Boss – Buy Less Choose well

As young and independent girls, we know how life can be difficult, especially if your tastes are like the ones of a billionaire but you’re an intern and your budget is very limited. Sometimes is very painful living your fashion life.

When you work in fashion, the standard is high and is not easy to still looking cool and fashionable and be on the budget.

So to fight against the market for human organs, I’ve compiled a list of key must-have pieces with my super wise tips for looking amazing (as me).

So Buy less, choose well. Let’s start.

  • Tailored Jackets

No matter the color, the fabric or the price, this piece needs to be fitted for your body and well made.

It’s a key element for different types of looks; from the formal to the more rock one. A blazer is like a magic chic SOS piece that can support you when you are just tired and sleepy and you have to look like you still have some dignity.

I bought a simple tuxedo jacket two years ago, from Topshop; it’s simple but looks luxurious thanks to the satin. Still wearing it and when I do everyone notices it – and they cannot but tell me how great I look.

  • It Bag

Invest in a good bag, but choose a brand that is aligned with your essence, something that fits with your look and your mood. You have to picture yourself in your daily life with this bag, not just “Yes this pouch is fitting with my Pink free Fur Coat that I wear twice a month”. You got the hint when you see a bag and says “this is my baby”, no point buying something just because is on trend now. This is my choice

  • Good Knitwear

You just need one. For my personal taste, a BLACK ONE  good and simple Knitwear is always the perfect option. The good garment and the simple lines will resolve all your 7.40  a.m .hysterical look dramas. With jeans, with a skirt, with velvet pants- ok basically with everything.

Invest little bit on this, save money from your late night MacDonald’s dinners and from the 4th vodka tonic. You will thank me- my Pleasure.

  • Classic Shoes

What I learned as a Fashion addicted is that the Shoes are everything.

So stop to buy heels that you will wear just for that trashy disco night, and don’t dare you to buy the anonymous white sneakers that you’ll wear with your skinny jeans (oh so creative) and save money. These shoes and these will be your new best friends.

Good materials, statement lines and comfortable are what you need to look for; something that you will love to wear every day and give a fancy twist to all the office looks even if you are in the middle of a mental breakdown.

  • White Shirt

So obviously, it is a BASIC. I prefer to go for something more refined like the Korean collar one. Focus on the materials, no synthetic, no polyester, only cotton, ONLY COTTON.

An item like this is like a botox, boost you and makes younger all the classic looks.

  • Masculine COAT

I do not suggest to buy the legendary 101801 Camel Coat by Max Mara, but let’s take an inspiration from this true beauty (Mum if you are reading this, take note please).

Investing in a nice, simple masculine line and great textured coat gives you a timeless look, but also it fits with all your fashionable outfits. Remember these rules: it has to keep you warm and go only for Black, Navy or Camel color for your first piece.

  • CRAZYNESS  with THE ACCESSORIES

Based on the items that I suggested above to you, it seems all so boring and that we will look like a spiny secretary.

But trust me, you will NOT- at least if you’ll follow all these tips.

These items are the perfect base,  that will give you an elegant, polished look. Now we need to add the fashion wildness, and mixing all these basics with crazy accessories.

Hats, sunglasses, jewellery and belts boost every look

Can you picture yourself with a black cashmere turtleneck, with nice 70’ jeans and huge red earrings? THE GLAM.

Or choose a nice headband that will transform you in a city Diva.

Also, buy the coolest lipstick on the market that can bring back to life also the most boring and outdated outfit.  ALL IN A BUDGET.

The turnaround of this part of the wardrobe can be more frequent than the ready-to-wear pieces, so each month you can add something new to your collection. Better than buying the umpteenth synthetic Knitwear for 19 Euros, that the next month will be ruined.

  1. Hello Glamobserver,

Well, first I love your blog and since a month I try to catch up on every post you had published.

I like some of the piece you choose for your buy less but chose well article really, but I have to say that I’m not sure that you are aware that an intern can’t afford all that pieces (except maybe the knitted piece by madewell that i really looooove by the way) even by saving money from a late mc donalds as you mention it.
You should definitely add an alternative pièce cheaper than 200$ because let’s be honest a fashion intern is not that much paid

Above all of that, continue with all that precious tips that you give us i take a lot of note and i love the blog
    Thank you

    1. Hi Jennifer,

thank you so much for your comment! I’m so glad you like the blog.

Of course we know how it’s hard to be an intern and to have a limited budget, Ambra will do her best to find for you the best pieces under 200$! In this post she was suggesting to not buy 20 pieces at 20€ each, but to buy maybe just one in a while but that it’s a good investment. Stay tuned for the next shopping selection post, I promise you’ll like it!
