There are moments in everyone’s life when you feel stuck and you feel like you cannot escape from this condition. This happens at any level of one’s life and career. As a student, the last exam and the thesis seem so close, but at the same time so far to reach, as a new grad getting your first fashion job seems impossible without previous experience and all the competition and as a junior or senior you feel frustrated by your current job.

Whatever stage of your career you are, if you want to see a change you have to do things you have never done. You have to get out of your comfort zone. How can you see a change if you keep doing the things you’ve done so far?

I’ve listed 10 things to do today to boost your career in fashion. I’m sure there is at least one you have never done before. Choose one, two or them all but do not choose any if you want to boost your career in fashion.

Create that Instagram profile

Instagram is a powerful career tool that you must use today. Not only is it a great way to connect with people who work in fashion, but it is also a very powerful search engine. By using the right hashtags, your content can be found by the right people. Whether you want to make your profile a mix between private and professional life or create a new one to use as a portfolio, do it today! Building your own personal brand online is essential not only to have the opportunity to be discovered by the right people and get a job offer but also to demonstrate to the recruiter who will check your Instagram profile when they receive your application, that you are the right person.

Ask for a promotion

Are you frustrated by your current role, do you think you’ve done everything and have achieved excellent results? Prepare a file with the things you have done and the numbers you have achieved (the Instagram profile has grown by 13%, the shooting has been carried out smoothly and has satisfied everyone, all the events have been perfectly realized, sales have increased by 5 % , your articles have been read 50k times..) and talk to the recruiter and your manager about your promotion.

Be proactive

Being quite, speaking only when you’re asked and doing just what you are asked for is not always a good thing. Obviously you have to do your job and what your boss asks you to do, but you also need to be proactive. Act before you are asked, propose your idea that could improve a process or even the way you work, go beyond your responsibilities. Be curious, ask to be able to do more and more.

Apply for the jobs at your favorite top fashion companies

How can you get a job at the top fashion brands if you don’t apply? Yesterday I had two consultations with a member and a student and both girls said: “My dream would be to work in established fashion companies, but I did not apply because I don’t think I can make it”. I spent the whole afternoon first encouraging them and then thinking about this even when the calls were over. Which led me to do a bunch of IG stories about this. You can’t get a job at the best fashion brands if you don’t even apply. You’re losing even before starting. Nobody judges you when you send your CV. The worst that can happen is that you do not receive a response to your application, or that someone tells you that they are looking for someone with a different profile. But why do you want to give up from the start? People with fewer skills and experience than you could take the job. Do not think that there is always someone better than you and therefore you give up far before knowing what the company could think of you. This is an attitude and condition that you must abandon if you want to have a successful career in fashion. Do you think that the people who work today in companies such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior .. got their job because they have a CV with infinite skills or years and years of experience? They got it because they were certainly suitable for that role, but above all, simply because they first applied! They never gave up and applied for many job offers in prestigious companies and sooner or later, they got what they wanted.

What makes the difference in your career and life are not the things you do once, but the actions you take many, many times every day, always.
So please girl, never ever be afraid to apply or ask for something. In life and especially in fashion, those who get things asked for them. A girl does an internship at Vogue because even if there was no open position, she sent an email to the editor. Another got a job at the PR agency because her CV was creative and during the job interview she showed interest, passion, and desire to do. If you don’t act, how can you get things? Start today!

Enroll in that course

Do you have a career dream but do you think it is impossible to achieve it because you lack the necessary skills? Do you really want to accept a job and take a career path for the whole life that is different from what you’re passionate about, just because it was the easiest path or because it was in line with your university studies and you already owned the skills? In a few years, when you’ll look back at your life and career, you will regret not having taken over your life.

You can do the job you have so much passion for. Work on what you are missing. Do you have to learn Photoshop? Do you want to become a designer and you need the skills to sketch? Do you want to work abroad and need to learn the language? Do you want to suddenly change your career and become a photographer? Sign up for a course, attend one online and acquire the skills you lack in order to get what you want!

Connect with someone on LinkedIn and send a message

If you’ve been following the Glam Observer for a while, you’ve probably read in several articles or listened to in a podcast or video that connections are critical to your career. So today, add to your LinkedIn network editors, managers, buyers… but be sure to send a personal note when requesting the connection.

Reach out to some you follow on Instagram and ask to meet up for a coffee

Do you follow a stylist, editor, manager who lives in your city and with whom you interacted on Instagram a few times with comments and messages? It’s time to take the relationship to the next level, invite her for a coffee!

Change your habits

As I said before, the changes and results are given by the actions we repeat consistently not by doing something once. It’s like when you want to become fitter: if you go to the gym once, nothing happens. You have to be consistent to achieve your goals. And a great way to be consistent is to set up habits in your daily routines.

Do you want to get a job in fashion? Add to your agenda to apply for 3 jobs every single day.

Do you want to know more about the fashion industry? Read a fashion book 30 minutes every day, listen to a podcast instead of music while going to the gym, in the subway or in the shower.

Do you want to learn photoshop, a new language or anything else? Add a space of 30 minutes a day to attend an online course.

If you are thinking that you do not have time to do these things because you are already super busy between your school, your job or you already have multiple jobs, it is enough to anticipate your alarm clock in the morning by one hour to make time for all these new habits to boost your career in fashion.

Watch a webinar

Webinars are a great way to learn many new things about your favorite topic generally in 45 minutes. It’s like an accelerated online course. Search for a new job

If after a couple of years in the same company you do not see the possibility of growth, but especially if over the last months you haven’t’ learned anything new, it is probably time to start looking at job offers to take a new challenging career path.
