Like the fashion industry, also the beauty one is really glamorous but also high competitive. There are lots of people who dreams to become a famous makeup artist, to work with celebrities, for magazines cover shoots, to be in the backstage during fashion weeks and also to launch your own beauty line. The good news is that, even if it’s really competitive today, thanks to Instagram and Youtube now it’s easier than ever to make yourself discoverable and to show your work to the world.

If you want to become a makeup artist you surely already know that you can attend a makeup artist school or some courses, but I’m here today to share with you some other cool insider tips to help you to become a famous makeup artist.

Start as assistant

Assist as much as you can when you’re starting out. Go online and research for all the agencies and apply for the assistant role.

Seek to work for a makeup brand in-store to gain makeup experience and practice your art. You may not be paid, but what you learn in both skill set and behaviour can often be better training than any makeup school.

Never say no

No matter how big or small the job, because big breaks don’t happen straight away. By taking on as much work as possible, you’re constantly building and expanding a network of useful contacts. As they say, it’s not what you know; it’s who you know. So do not decline any job, even the smallest experience can learn you something.

Build your online portfolio

To become a makeup artist today it’s extremely important that you have an Instagram account and it’s a plus if you have also a Youtube channel where you show your works. Try to be professional from the beginning,  invest in some softboxes to shoot with a great light condition and don’t use filter so you can show your art as it’s best. Displaying as much work as possible is a guaranteed way of getting noticed. To not forget to tag the makeup brands when you create a makeup look. You’ll never know if some brand will repost your pic.

Join Makeup competitions

Last month I attended the final of the NYX beauty awards. Opportunities like these are great to show your works to lots of people. You’ll get featured on brands channels plus usually there is a professional jury that studies your works so you may not be the winner of every competition but for sure someone will know you and call you for a job.

Networking

Being an assistant is a great opportunity to networking but also you can also join makeup and beauty events. Sephora, Mac and the department store of your town organizes many events, a new product launch, makeup lessons, skin tests… You definitely need to attend these events to networking and introduce yourself to some makeup artist or some journalist that are there.
