Natalie Hughes has a decade’s experience in the fashion industry as a social media strategist, digital content creator and journalist. After several internships at fashion magazines, she was able to get her first job as soon as she graduated. She then worked at Net A Porter and as Social Media Editor and then started freelancing mainly consulting as social media strategist for fashion brands such as Cristian Louboutin. She decided to start The Fashion Digital a fashion social media agency, specialising in social media, copywriting, digital content and design for fashion brands and companies.

She and her team work with a roster of global fashion and lifestyle brands.

In this new episode of The Glam Observer Podcast we talked about her career journey: from the beginning to how she ended up founding The Fashion Digital and she also provides some amazing tips to who want to pursue a career as social media strategist.

She studied English Literature, so she’s another example of someone who have a successful career in fashion with no fashion background and what’s even more interesting is that she did lots of internships during holidays while studying so she was able to get her first job as soon as she graduated. So take notes girls: we already talked about the importance of internships to get a job in fashion, but if you don’t want to be an intern when you’re out of school, the only way to get a job is having interned while in school.

I asked Natalie what it takes to become a great social media person and she said that the biggest misconception is that if you’re present on social media that means you’re an expert. To be a social media strategist or editor you need to develop skills outside of that so as well as managing your own platforms do internships at magazines and brands so you can learn about the scheduling platforms, analytics tools and other that you need for this job. She also suggests to stay up to date with social media developments and to do lots of research.

As a strategist, you need to introduce your brand to new updates before others, find tips and tricks to beat the algorithm, be a great writer because even if social media are visual is all about the copy and message you’re sharing. Being a good writer is an important part to be a good social media strategist.

We talked about much more in the episode so tune in and enjoy it!
